Lots of my previous works have explored vortex like forms, where I would layer colours/ inks in increased strengths. For this project I wanted to explore ways in which tints (the addition of white) and shades (the addition of black) affect a colour. By printing based down shades of black and white I was interested in the cumulative effect and variance brought to a layer of pure colour. I chose vermillion as it is on the more orange side, hoping the difference of effects would create notable changes in colour from pinks to browns. Using the same concentration each time the steps between each layer produce consistent and even steps.

This initial work I produced on sheets of wood, but I felt I could get some more use out of the screen and decided to push the work further exploring the combined effects of tints and shade further with a series of prints on paper.
Seeing the different possible optical effects created through varied combinations of layering was exciting. Using the exercise as a means of exploration rather than an attempt at creating a consistent or edition or hunt for perfection.

Alongside the Vermillion works, I used the offcuts of wood to create a trio of works exploring tints and shades on purple and golden yellow grounds, seeing how even more levels of layering affect the colours and create illusions of depth.

Further investigations into the physical mixing of tints/shades of pigments, in visual comparison to transparent overprinting as in this project is something to pursue in future.
